O ramo Britânico da APECS (Association of Polar Early Career Scientists) organizou um workshop que decorreu entre 4 e 6 de Novembro na universidade de Sheffield, em que o público-alvo eram alunos de mestrado e doutoramento. Os objectivos deste encontro compreenderam: aumento da comunicação entre jovens cientistas polares; aumentar o conhecimento científico e técnico sobre a criosfera; dar aconselhamento sobre o desenvolvimento da carreira académica; e incentivar os investigadores a desenvolver actividades de educação e divulgação científica.
Este workshop contou com a participação de vários países (Canadá, Dinamarca, Alemanha, etc.) incluindo a participação portuguesa de Alice Ferreira. Neste encontro a jovem investigadora polar apresentou o recente filme de divulgação científica sobre a investigação portuguesa na Antárctida com o título “Permafrost. Ciência Polar a 62ºS”, além de um poster sobre a sua investigação intitulado “Analysis of air and soil freezing indexes to determine the influence of snow cover on the ground thermal regime. Preliminary results (Livingston Island, Antarctic)”.
O workshop incluía uma saída de campo ao Peak District que constituí o sector meridional das montanhas Penninas. A excursão envolveu um circuito em torno do planalto de Kinder Scout (636m) de constituição arenítica e calcária. A morfologia actualmente é dominada por processos de erosão hídrica e elevada actividade dinâmica de vertentes, sendo a principal característica um extenso labirinto de ravinas que dissecam a espessa turfeira herdada das últimas glaciações quaternárias.

United Kingdom Polar Network

The British branch of the APECS (Association of Polar Early Career Scientists) organized a workshop that occurred between 4 and 6 November at the University of Sheffield, aimed at early career scientists such as master, Ph.D students and post-doctoral researchers. The objectives of this meeting were mainly to increase the communication between young polar scientists, increase the scientific knowledge and skills about the cryosphere; to provide information and advice on the development of the academic career; and to stimulate the researchers to develop education and outreach activities.
The workshop counted with participants from several countries (Canada, Denmark, Germany, etc.) including the portuguese participation of Alice Ferreira. In this meeting the young polar researcher presented the recent outreach film about the portuguese scientific work on the Antarctic entitled “Permafrost. Polar science at 62ºS”, and a poster on her research entitled “Analysis of air and soil freezing indexes to determine the influence of snow cover on the ground thermal regime. (Livingston Island, Antarctic). Preliminary results”.
The workshop included a field trip to the Peak District that forms the southern end of the Pennines. The excursion involved a circuit around the plateau of Kinder Scout (636m) constituted of sandstone and limestone formations. The morphology is currently dominated by processes of hydric erosion and high slope activity. The main feature is a deep maze-like gullies that dissect the thick bog inherited from the quaternary glaciations.

Entre 20 e 24 de Outubro Alice Ferreira esteve na Universidade de Valladolid sob direcção científica de Enrique Serrano a elaborar um plano de trabalho investigação conjunto sobre os Picos da Europa. O trabalho de investigação visa aumentar o conhecimento sobre o regime térmico da superfície do solo e estabelecer relações com a morfodinâmica periglaciária no Maciço Central do Picos da Europa.

Alice Ferreira stayed at the University of Valladolid to develop collaborative research on the ground thermal regime and periglacial processes.
From 20 to 24 October Alice Ferreira has been at the University of Valladolid under scientific direction of Enrique Serrano to elaborate a work plan to jointly develop research at the Picos de Europa. The research aims to increase knowledge about the thermal regime of the ground surface and establish relations with the periglacial morphodynamics in the Central Massif of Picos de Europa.

Gonçalo Vieira foi distinguido pela direcção do Ciência Hoje com o Seeds of Science «Ciências da Terra, do Mar e da Atmosfera» pelo trabalho de coordenação da investigação portuguesa na Antárctida.

Gonçalo Vieira received the Seeds of Science 2010 prize by Ciência Hoje on the "Earth, ocean and atmosphere sciences" as a recognition for his work on the coordination of Portuguese research in the Antarctic.

Alice Ferreira e Marco Jorge, investigadores do AntECC, apresentam no dia 20 de Novembro de 2009, pelas 14h, na sala 5.2 da Faculdade de Letras a palestra “Geomorfodinâmica dos Maciços da Maladeta e de Posets” (Pirenéus)".
Falarão das actividades desenvolvidas no estágio de campo em que participaram em finais de Setembro (ver posts em baixo) com uma equipa de investigadores espanhóis, nomeadamente: (1) de técnicas de monitorização da geomorfodinâmica periglaciária e glaciária (glaciares rochosos e glaciares) e (2) da metodologia de instalação de rede termométrica da superfície do solo, assim como da geomorfologia, enfatizando os factores de controlo da geomorfodinâmica, dos dois maciços.
