AntECC members G. Vieira, M. Neves, A. Ferreira and M. Jorge, together with I. Bernardo from CGUL attended the general meeting for the preparation of the Spanish Antarctic Campaign 2009-10 in the 28th September in Madrid. In the following day, the PERMAMODEL-PERMANTAR team met at the University of Alcalá to prepare the activities that will take place in Deception and Livingston Islands.

Bernardo do CGUL, estiveram na reunião de preparação da campanha antárctica de 2009-10, em Madrid, no dia 28 de Setembro. No dia seguinte, a equipa participou na reunião dos projectos PERMAMODEL-PERMANTAR de preparação das actividades de investigação que irão decorrer nas ilhas Deception e Livingston.

We have just shipped the equipment for the next Antarctic Season in Livingston and Deception islands. Besides the equipment for permafrost, climate and geomorphodynamics monitoring, this year we are shipping a new Mark V Zodiac that will be located at the Bulgarian Antarctic Station St. Kliment Ohridsky for support of research and logistics.
Alice Ferreira (AntECC) and Ivo Bernardo (CGUL) that appear in the photo will go for the first time to the Antarctic, together with Mário Neves that is doing is third campaign. The field season for AntECC will start in early December and will end in mid February.

Acabámos de preparar e enviar o equipamento para a próxima campanha antárctica que decorrerá nas ilhas Livingston e Deception. Além do equipamento para manutenção da instrumentação de monitorização do permafrost, clima e dinâmica geomorfológica, destaca-se uma lancha Zodiac Mark V que ficará na Bas Antárctica Búlgara St. Kliment Ohridski e que servirá para apoiar a logística e as actividades de investigação.
Alice Ferreira (AntECC) e Ivo Bernardo (CGUL), que aparecem na fotografia vão pela primeira vez para a Antárctida, enquanto Mário Neves participará na sua terceira campanha antárctica. A campanha antárctica do AntECC iniciar-se-à no início de Dezembro e decorrerá até meados de Março.

The new ESF COST action RESCUE on Responses to Environmental and Societal Challenges for our Unstable Earth took place in Rueil-Malmaison, Paris from 9 to 10 September 2009. Gonçalo Vieira has participated in this important workshop having contributed to the Working Group 2: Requirements for research methodologies and
data.

The International Polar Year 2007-08 was an important event for Portuguese Polar science, and it also induced a significant development of research on present-day and pleistocene cold environments. The adhesion of Portugal to the International Permafrost Association, initially as associated member and in 2008 as a full member is also, largely a result of the International Polar Year. It has been a coordinated and interdisciplinary effort, where international collaboration played a major role, with Spain as one of the main partners.

The 1st Iberian Congress of the International Permafrost Association in
Guarda, Portugal (June 2007) was an important milestone for the Iberian community of researchers on cold environments. The event marked the strong collaboration between Portugal and Spain, that had been developing especially after the mid 1990’s. It reflects the transition from a stage where contacts were more sporadic, to a new one, where Iberian science on cold environments and the guidelines for collaborative research are discussed jointly on a two-year basis.

The current issue brings together some of the presentations of the Guarda Congress after submission to Finisterra. They show the breadth of the science discussed in Guarda, as well as its interdisciplinary characteristics and high standards. The papers include research topics such as paleoenvironmental reconstruction of cold environments, ground temperature monitoring, mountain permafrost mapping, geothermal analysis of boreholes, glacial sedimentology, mountain topoclimatology and the polygonal terrains of Mars. The research areas focus on the Iberian Peninsula, but also other regions are included, such as the Antarctic or new research themes, like planetary geomorphology.

O Ano Polar Internacional 2007-08 foi um momento determinante para a ciência polar portuguesa, e permitiu também um novo impulso nos estudos dos ambientes frios presentes e herdados. A adesão de Portugal, primeiro como membro associado e, em 2008, como membro de pleno direito da International Permafrost Association é, em larga medida, um resultado do esforço levado a cabo no Ano Polar Internacional. Foi um esforço concertado e interdisciplinar, em que a colaboração internacional foi essencial, tendo sido Espanha um dos parceiros mais importantes em todo o processo.

A realização na cidade da Guarda do I Congresso Ibérico da International Permafrost Association, em Julho de 2007, foi um importante marco para a comunidade ibérica que se dedica ao estudo dos ambientes frios, e foi o culminar de um processo de colaboração entre os dois países, que se vinha intensificando desde meados da década de 1990. Este evento marca a passagem de uma fase de contactos mais esporádicos, para outra em que a ciência dos ambientes frios ibérica se passa a reunir bienalmente, para discutir os principais progressos,mas também as prioridades futuras da investigação.

O presente volume reúne alguns dos trabalhos submetidos à revista Finisterra, na sequência do congresso da Guarda de 2007, e constitui uma amostra significativa da amplitude de temas discutidos, do seu carácter interdisciplinar e da sua elevada qualidade. Os artigos deste número da Finisterra versam temáticas como a reconstituição paleogeográfica de ambientes frios, a dinâmica geomorfológica, a monitorização de regimes térmicos do solo, a cartografia do permafrost de montanha, os estudos geotérmicos com fins de reconstituição paleoambiental, a sedimentologia glaciária, o estudo dos climas locais de montanha, e até a análise dos terrenos poligonais de Marte. Os temas incidem no território ibérico, mas não só, sendo evidente a importância das colaborações dos dois países no estudo do permafrost da Antárctida, e surgindo, como nova área de investigação, aspectos da geomorfologia de Marte.

September is a month of lot's of logistical work, with the preparation of all the equipment that will follow to the next Antarctic campaign. Everything has to be organized, checked and packed until mid-September and then transported to Cartagena in Spain, where it will be shipped to the Antarctic on-board the Spanish vessel "Las Palmas". The equipment should arrive in Livingston and Deception islands by late November. In January and February the PERMAMODEL-PERMANTAR campaign will take place with the participation of three Portuguee scientists: Mário Neves (AntECC-CEG), Alice Ferreira (AntECC-CEG) and Ivo Bernardo (CGUL).

Setembro é um mês de intenso trabalho logístico com a preparação do equipamento para a próxima campanha antárctica. Tudo tem que ser organizado, verificado e empacotado até meados do mês e depois transportado para Cartagena em Espanha, onde todo o material será embarcado para a Antárctida no navio espanhol "Las Palmas". O equipamento deverá chegar às ilhas Deception e Livingston no final de Novembro. Em Janeiro e Fevereiro a campanha PERMAMODEL-PERMANTAR terá início com a participação de três cientistas portugueses: Mários Neves e Alice Ferreira (AntECC-CEG) e Ivo Bernardo (CGUL).
